Emma Reynolds, Labour Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton North East, wishes to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is known as the “silent killer” because it is a colorless, odorless gas that can kill a person within minutes of exposure. Emma said: “Every year, carbon monoxide poising kills more than fifty people in the UK. It is also responsible for the hospitalization of another 4,000 people.

“According to research done by the Carbon Monoxide Be-Alarmed! Campaign, a third of parents do not currently have a carbon monoxide detector in their homes. However, carbon monoxide detectors are now mandatory in rented residential accommodation, as well as in rooms with solid fuel appliances.

“Not only is it dangerous to not have a carbon monoxide detector, but it is now also against the law for landlords to fail to install them in rented accommodation. I strongly urge and encourage every person to install a carbon monoxide detector in their home. Carbon monoxide detectors cost less than £20 and they help to keep us safe, so there is no reason or excuse good enough to excuse a person from not to having one.”
