Emma calls for compensation for Paulette Wilson and other members of the Windrush generation
Emma Reynolds, Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East, has called on the government to give compensation to her constituent Paulette Wilson who was detained and treated in an appalling and inhumane manner. The Windrush generation and their parents were invited here to help rebuild Britain after the Second World War. The way they have been treated by this government is a national disgrace.
In Parliament this week, Emma asked the Home Secretary the following question: “In 2015 my constituent Paulette Wilson, a 62-year-old grandmother who came to the UK from Jamaica 50 years ago, was sent a letter by the Home Office out of the blue—to her dismay—telling her that there was no evidence of her lawful entry into the country, and no evidence of her right to remain. Two years later, she was detained at Yarl’s Wood and threatened with deportation to a country where she had no surviving family, and where she had not been since the age of 10. I want to know why it has taken the detention of my constituent, and other cases raised by Members on both sides of the House, for the Government to get a grip on this issue and whether my constituent will be fully compensated for loss of income, loss of benefits, and the inhumane way in which she was treated.”
