Emma meets campaigners from Wolverhampton at climate change lobby in Parliament
Emma Reynolds, Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East and Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has attended a climate change lobby of parliament. The lobby, organised by the Climate Coalition UK, a group of charities and campaigning groups, took place yesterday, 17 June. People from across the UK came to London to lobby their MPs including a group from Wolverhampton. Emma met with the group to talk about how more can be done to stop climate change.
In December, negotiators representing more than 190 countries will meet in Paris for a conference designed to create a new global climate change deal largely focused on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Any deal would come into force in 2020, when current commitments are due to expire.
Emma said “I was delighted to meet constituents from Wolverhampton at the lobby to discuss how politicians can do more to stop climate change. I believe that further action to tackle climate change is needed, and the climate change lobby was very important in helping to highlight the risks of failing to act. Our planet’s changing climate is already harming many of the world’s most vulnerable people. 2015 is therefore a crucial year for international action on climate change with a UN summit at Paris in December.”
“I want the UK Government to lead by example and push for ambitious emissions targets for all countries at the Paris Summit. The government should call for a strong, legally binding global pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 from 1990 levels, however I worry that the Conservatives are failing to prioritise tackling climate change.”
