Emma Reynolds MP calls on government to change course to halt rising unemployment

Emma has again called on the government to rethink its failed economic policies which continue to cause rising unemployment in Wolverhampton.

As figures continue to show a month on month rise in unemployment in Wolverhampton North East, with 151 more people claiming jobseekers allowance in January 2012 than December 2011, Emma said that now was the time for the government to act.

The number of unemployed claimants in Wolverhampton North East constituency now stands at 4,432, 11.9% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64.

Speaking after the release of the figures, Emma said,

“Unemployment is the highest it has been in nearly two decades and Wolverhampton North East now has the 30th highest level of unemployment of the 650 UK parliamentary constituencies. It is clear that this government is failing the hard working people of Wolverhampton, many of whom are struggling to find employment to support themselves and their families.

"I am also deeply concerned about the  1,455 unemployed 18-24 year olds in Wolverhampton North East.  This wasted talent and potential represents the worst of the unemployment crisis we are facing as a prolonged period of unemployment can be hugely damaging to young people’s future prospects for work.

“As much as the government may try to shift the blame, the truth is there for all to see.  The government’s current economic strategy is simply failing.  Unemployment and the government rate of borrowing continue to rise and we have recently seen the country’s AAA credit rating being thrown into doubt.  Labour has a clear plan to stimulate jobs and growth in our economy and halt the current crisis in youth unemployment.  The government should abandon its failing economic policy and start to look at the sensible measures we have suggested.”
