West Midlands Mayor Andy Street’s proposed takeover of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s powers were rejected by the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Responding to the news, Emma said:

“This whole process has been a huge distraction from the real issues facing policing. At a time of rising crime and falling budgets, it is clearly not the time to reduce the oversight of such a crucial public service to a part-time role. This is a hugely welcome decision and I am pleased the Combined Authority has thrown out these proposals.

“Policing needs a laser-like focus to tackle the region’s knife crime epidemic, and to ensure the force is ready to tackle new forms of crime like online fraud and cybercrime. I hope Mayor Street will now use his existing powers to build confidence in West Midlands Police, and does not fixate on future power grabs.”
