Emma Reynolds, MP for Wolverhampton North East is today urging families to find out more about what they can do if they find themselves in fuel poverty. Fuel Poverty Awareness Day is a national day aimed at raising awareness of the problems of those living in cold, damp homes and the solutions available to tackle the problem. Today, NEA (National Energy Action) have released a new report that reveals the UK has the sixth-worst long-term rate of excess winter mortality out of 30 European countries, with an average of 9,700 deaths per year attributed to cold homes.

Emma said, “The day marks the official end of the NEA’s Warm Homes Campaign, during which they have been highlighting the impossible choices faced by families unable to afford even the most basic of living essentials, and challenging Government to take action. Their most recent research showed that over 430,000 of the poorest children are living in private rented properties that are impossible to keep warm, with landlords failing in their duties to provide safe, decent housing.”
