Wolverhampton North East MP Emma Reynolds has welcomed a Government announcement for new funds for maintained nursery schools – but has called on Ministers to put a long term funding plan in place.

An announcement by Education Minister Nadhim Zahawi confirmed a new £24m fund for maintained nurseries which will continue funding to the end of the 2019/20 academic year. The Government had only previously committed to funding until March 2020.

Responding to the news, Emma said:

“Today’s announcement of extra support for maintained nursery schools is welcome, and shows the Government is listening. However, I am concerned that today’s announcement only provides a few more months of funding. Support is still only confirmed to the end of the 2020 academic year.

“All maintained nursery schools across the country are rated as “outstanding” or “good” by Ofsted. There are 3 in my constituency: Ashmore Park Nursery, Bushbury Nursery School and Low Hill Nursery School. They all provide an outstanding standard of education to young children. They are the jewel in the crown of early years education.

“I have worked alongside my colleague Lucy Powell MP and other MPs from across parliament to put pressure on the government to secure additional funding.

“This announcement is welcome but maintained nursery schools need a long-term settlement beyond September 2020 so they can plan for the future and keep providing a high standard of education. I will continue to put pressure on the government to commit to their long term funding.”
