Emma Reynolds MP has today welcomed the Supreme Court judgment that only Parliament has the power to trigger Article 50 and upholding parliamentary sovereignty. The government should never have tried to bypass Parliament in the first place nor should the government have wasted taxpayers’ money in fighting this case.

Now that it is clear that Parliament will have a say, I will vote to trigger Article 50 because I accept the result of the referendum.

We live in a parliamentary democracy and therefore it is the role of MPs to scrutinise the government’s plans and hold them to account. This is not about delaying Brexit. It is about ensuring we get the best Brexit deal for the UK.

The government should therefore present Parliament with a proper Brexit plan. It’s very important that this includes a formal statement of the government’s negotiating objectives so that the government can be judged on whether it delivers on its promises. One of the most important priorities for Wolverhampton is whether tariff-free trade between Britain and the EU will continue after Brexit. This is vital for aerospace and car manufacturers who employ tens of thousands of people in Wolverhampton and the West Midlands.
