“Families deserve to know the truth” – Emma on Primodos
Emma has called on the government to new evidence about link between the hormone pregnancy drug Primodos and severe birth defects.
Primodos was prescribed as a pregnancy test in the 1960s and 1970s. For years families have been campaigning for the truth, yet they have repeatedly had their concerns dismissed and their questions unanswered. One of Emma’s constituents was born with life-altering health issues, after his mum was given Primodos while pregnant in 1967. Emma has been campaigning for justice for the family since she met with them in 2015 and is a member of the cross-party campaigning group on this issue, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hormone Pregnancy Tests.
A debate took place in parliament yesterday (23rd April) after research from Oxford University suggested that an expert working group set up by the government failed to properly assess the available evidence and therefore discounted the possible links between the drug and birth defects
Emma said “The Department of Health and Social Care must immediately look into this matter and take account of this new evidence which raises serious questions about the findings of the expert working group.
“I am hugely concerned to learn that vital analysis was not included in their report and that its findings may therefore be flawed. For too long the concerns of the families campaigning for answers about Primodos have been overlooked by the government. My constituents and the many other families up and down the country deserve to know the truth.”
