Emma challenges EU Leave campaign over their threats to workers’ rights
Emma is backing a Labour campaign to highlight the threat posed to workers’ rights from Conservative eurosceptics. Today, Emma has signed an online petition calling on the Tory dominated Leave campaign to come clean about which hard-won workers’ rights they want to scrap if Britain votes to leave the EU.
The petition, launched by the Labour party, has gathered over 40,000 signatures so far. There has also been a joint statement from 10 trade union leaders, including the general secretaries of the country’s largest trade unions: Unite, Unison, the GMB and Usdaw, warning that the Conservatives would “negotiate away” workers’ rights if the UK decides to leave the EU.
Britain’s EU membership guarantees a range of employment rights for UK workers. Among these are 28 days of paid holiday and anti-discrimination laws.
Just a few weeks ago, Priti Patel, the Leave campaigner and Tory Employment Minister, claimed that, “if we could just halve the burdens of the EU social and employment legislation we could deliver a £4.3 billion boost to our economy and 60,000 new jobs.”
Boris Johnson has said that workers protections were red tape holding back growth and described the UK’s implementation of EU employment rights as “very disappointing”.
Emma said, “The Labour party is calling for people to vote Remain on 23 June.”
“This is a crucial decision for British workers. A vote to leave will put the rights that many of us take for granted in the firing line. The Brexit Tories might try to disguise this by vague talk of getting rid of ‘regulation’ and ‘red tape’ but what they actually mean is getting rid of vital rights that protect people at work.”
“The leaders of Britain’s biggest trade unions have urged their 6 million members to vote to stay in the EU, They are right to warn about the dangers to working people of a vote to leave. It would allow a Tory government to dismantle hard-won worker rights around parenting, holiday and equality.”
“Being in the EU guarantees us rights to minimum paid leave, rights for agency workers, paid parental leave, equal pay, anti-discrimination laws, and protection for the workforce when companies change hands.”
“People in Wolverhampton and across the country rely on these protections and they deserve the truth from the Leave campaign. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Priti Patel need to come clean to the British people and spell out exactly which of their rights would be scrapped if we leave the European Union.”
