Emma Reynolds MP supports Christian Aid “Enough Food for Everyone” campaign on world hunger
Emma Reynolds met recently with representatives from Christian Aid to hear first hand of their campaign to help alleviate food shortages in the third world. The aim of the campaign is to pose four key questions to challenge people’s thinking on this important and emotive issue:
What if we stop big companies dodging taxes in poor countries?
What if we make the right investments to stop people dying from hunger and help the poorest people feed themselves?
What if we stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and use crops to feed people, not fuel cars?
What if we force governments and big corporations to be honest and open about their actions that stop people getting enough food?
Commenting on the campaign, Emma Reynolds said: “It is shocking that over 2 million children die each year from malnutrition and one in eight men, women and children go to bed hungry every night. The plight of those dying from hunger is one that touches us all and many people are angered by what they see on their television screens almost daily and want governments to do more to help.”
“Just one of the solutions put forward by Christian Aid is to ensure companies pay their proper tax share and I am delighted to be supporting their campaign.”
“I agreed to write directly to the Chancellor to ask what government is doing to support the objectives of the campaign and to seek a commitment that the aid budget in particular will not be reduced.”
